Description

The warp thread, white organic cotton produced in the US, is dyed at the Studio in an organic indigo vat using Japanese indigo harvested and produced in the U.S. The weft yarn is American-grown and milled sustainable cotton that comes naturally in pale green. Once the cloth is hand-woven, it is naturally dyed and overdyed over a span of four days in American-grown black walnut with iron to create a shade of subdued green; because the warp yarn is pre-dyed, this process gives the unique unevenness throughout the cloth’s surface. The pattern is drafted by tweaking the technique of zero-waste patterning to minimize waste. The construction of the outer shell is done by hand; the lining (ethically produced organic hemp) is sewn on a modernized antique Singer sewing machine; and the finishing details are finessed by hand. The original button is hand-crafted at a casting shop in New York City based on a wax mold made at the Studio; the button hole is made by hand using waxed linen thread made in USA.

Weaving: 28 hours
Dyeing: Dye, rinse, dry. repeat the process over the course of 5 days
Construction: 15 hours
